The village movement, which originated in Boston, is part of a wave of volunteerism gathering strength at a time when governments are strapped for cash. The movement mobilizes volunteers to provide programs and services that older adults need to remain safe and independent in their homes, such as transportation, light home maintenance, tech support, friendly visits and check-in calls.
