The Lewis gets a couple thousand spring chinook during the season and is one of the better locations on the Columbia for catching these beautiful fish. Toutle all Forks: Are open for Steelhead, Trout and Salmon until March 15th. The Cowlitz itself headwaters in the Mount Rainier area clear up in eastern Pierce County, but major tributary Toutle River originates in the Mount St. Helens area. Youll use the same types of set ups in the heat of summer, but youll need weight or a down-rigger to reach the schools, which run deeper as the surface water warms. There are lots of lily pads and other aquatic plants, docks, island, coves, downed trees, and on and on.

Horseshoe Lake: was stocked with some large Trout in December and has been stocked with surplus Steelhead. The ethics of intentionally targeting smolt is debatable at best, and if you happen to catch one, its best to release it unharmed. The spring Chinook returns have been somewhat depressed in recent years, but some are available and these are a highly prize hatchery-bred fish. They begin arriving in May and June, just as salmon season is winding down, and theres usually solid steelhead fishing throughout July and August.
